Centring Civic Accessibility: A Toolkit for Local Governments & Community members
Disabled residents face barriers to participation at every stage of civic engagement, from
finding meeting information online to speaking at a public hearing. These barriers are rarely
the result of intention, but they are the result of inaction.
Co-developed by undergraduate students from UBC's Human Rights in a Globalized World course (PPGA391) in partnership with Women Transforming Cities, Centring Civic Accessibility is a resource created to help local governments identify and address civic accessibility barriers.
Through a review of existing accessibility guides, outreach to municipalities across BC, and direct feedback from WTC members with disabilities, we identified practical opportunities to make civic engagement more inclusive.
The recommendations are grouped into three categories: quick, moderate, and systemic changes.
By sharing what is already working and identifying what needs to change, this resource aims to support both day-to-day improvements and long-term planning.
