Dr. Julia Smith is an Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences, at Simon Fraser University. She currently co-leads the Gender and COVID-19 Project, which is conducting gender-based analysis of the pandemic response in 12 countries, including Canada. 

She regularly works in consultation with civil society, international organizations and government actors. Previously, she played a lead role in research on the commercial determinants of health and Indigenous Peoples’ health. 

Julia has taught in both the Faculty of Health Sciences and Department of Political Science at SFU, and has worked with community development projects in Canada, Europe and Africa. She holds a PhD in Social and International Studies from the University of Bradford, where she was a Rotary World Peace Fellow.

Julia volunteers with Mosaic and is passionate about improving access to childcare and environmental justice.
